Personal Growth and Time Management.

Personal growth is a lifelong activity, even though when we are young it is often easy to believe the process will be finished once we are done growing physically. It is actually a continuing process just like getting in a lot better physical condition, requiring practice, pauses to consider advancement towards personal goals, and persistent effort. Even though objectives may vary for different men and women, everybody starts the road to personal development in the very same place: deciding that it’s important, and identifying why it’s important on an individual level.

Fiction, regardless of whether offered in novel, television, or movie form, is full of instances of people struggling for personal development. Generally the hero is successful, even while the villain of the story never recognizes the point in the hard work and is puzzled by the hero’s attempts. An anti-hero like Scrooge in the classic story “A Christmas Carol” can begin with a contemptuous perspective then go through an about-face in priorities, ending well down the path toward growing as an individual.

Making an effort to grow personally is a choice that must come to every person at his own time. We can try and raise kids with the motives and priorities that will start them on the road, however eventually without inner motivation the effort starts to become pointless. Just as a person can be directed to try a stringent diet and workout regimen, without the inner drive to achieve success, that individual will never achieve the goals set.

Progress in personal growth will do considerably more for a happy, healthy life than prescription pills can offer, because becoming a much better person is actually a change at a foundational level, not the short term fix of chemical substances. This kind of growth can encompass many different areas of life; every person should undergo self-evaluation at some point. What character flaws are preventing a happier life? Which goals appear impossible to achieve?

In the event that such inner evaluation doesn’t come naturally or appears difficult, make an effort to consider yourself as a character in a story. If you were reading this particular story, would you cheer for that character; if not, what would need to change in order to convince you to root for that character’s success? Write down a quick lifetime description of the character that is you, including both victories and disappointments. Figure out what brought about the victories, and then list those things under strengths. Next look at the failures; look at exactly how they could have been avoided.

Personal growth can be accomplished by first deciding to try, then establishing goals, and then finally working toward those objectives every day.
